Morgan Karas

My name is Morgan Karas, I grew up in Lincoln RI and currently reside in Johnston with my husband and 2 boys who are 6 and 4. I hold a bachelors in Wildlife Conservation Biology that I received from the University of Rhode Island. I am currently earning my masters degree in secondary education biology and general science with a middle school endorsement. I love anything related to the outdoors, I bird watch, hike,I try tracking though not very well, I am also a wildlife rehabilitator which I love. Not many people ever get close to baby squirrels, or fawns, so to me this is a great honor and responsibility to be able to care for Rhode Island's wildlife. I also love playing with my 2 boys and my 2 dogs, needless to say they keep me very busy. I was also fortunate enough to serve in the United States Marine Corp where I meet some of the most amazing people and discovered how much I could accomplish if I really wanted to. It really was a very important time in my life and I still hold myself up to the standards set forth by the Marines. I am truly excited to begin my teaching career and will strive to become the epitome of what a teacher represents.

The Cells Unit Plan: Cells

The purpose of this unit is to explore the smallest unit of life, which is the cell. The unit begins by introducing the basic cell theory and the timeline in which it was created. It also describes the difference between a theory and a hypothesis. Section 2 introduces the microscope and the impact it has had on science. Cells are then broken down into two basic types, the eukaryotic and prokaryotic, indicating prokaryotic as the earliest type of living cells. Cellular membranes are introduced along with the other membranous organelles followed by a more detailed description of what makes up both animal and plant cells. The functions of the cell such as diffusion, transport, and energy are addressed. The division and specialization of cells is the last topic to be covered in this unit. Each lesson addresses these topics in a variety of ways (labs, activities, power points, videos, etc) in order to keep the students engaged and to prevent the unit from becoming monotonous.
